With a 9.15 meet and 11am kick off there was a predictable air of sleepiness and a more than occasional whiff of stale alcohol throughout the game. We started in a typical fashion with our forwards, spearheaded by the tireless and powerful Ellis and Flather taking the game to the Vandals and dominating in every area. This early pressure resulted in a try in the tenth minute from Monro, but unfortunately it went unconverted as Samuels in his mind was clearly still sipping Darjeeling and defending the realm.

From here on we should have capitalised on this and run in perhaps three or four more tries before half time but a combination of most people looking forward to the international that afternoon and an opposition bent on dragging us down to their level, resulted in us giving away some careless penalties and not playing our trade mark 'simple, fast and effective' rugby. We raised our game sufficiently in the second half inspired by some awesome displays of pace and power from Maltwood at full back, but at 8-8 with 15 minutes left we were all conscious that our unbeaten stretch may be on the line.

The forwards united once again and with Abrahams a few pounds lighter after red carding his Friday night supper at half time, they dominated proceedings. With 5 minutes left on the clock Flather went over, the result of a fast cross-pitch move. In fact he would have run straight over the dead ball line had 14 voices not screamed at him to fall over.

A scrappy disjointed game riddled by ill discipline and careless mistakes, but victorious none the less and it was good to see Romer-Lee back, even if he was smelling like a rotten apple after cider pressing. Also many thanks to Chippy Blacker and Brendan for turning out, hopefully we will see more of you. Onwards and upwards
