Spirits were high at warm-up; the Baa Baas had a strong side and we were
playing a team that we whipped last season.
Or so we thought - it transpired that we were actually playing the Exiles
1st team (thanks Richard Leslie), a team that trains, a team that Brendon
Plessey deemed 'serious enough' for him to defect to.
The whistle went and we were 2 tries down within the first 10 minutes - this
was indeed the Exiles 1st team and we gave them some space to run at. For
the next 45 minutes the Baa Baas played some of the best rugby of the season
as the Exiles were deprived of posession. The Baa Baas won every line out
(not a common event), turned over a lot of ball and made some surging
inroads to the oppo 22 thanks to Tim Penn and Charlie Chrichton in the backs
and thanks to a strong and determined forward performance which, on several
occassions, almost led to a score. Unfortunately the muddy conditions made
life difficult for the Baa Baa fliers and a try evaded us. As the clock
started to wind down in the 2nd half the injury count began to tell (our
front row was made up of 3 hookers and we lost 2 strong players in the back
line)and the opposition slowly exerted more control on the game. The turning
point was when, after the Baa Baas had camped out in the Exiles 22 for more
than 10 minutes with no points to show for their effort, the Exiles scored a
lucky break-away try. Thereafter some Baa Baa heads went down and the Exiles
found gaps where there had been none resulting in a final score of 0-39.
