Saturday January 12th provided the
Black Baa Baa's with some tough competition from the Richmond Heavies.
A mixture of 1st and 2nd team players from the past days when Richmond
dominated the London rugby premier division produced quite frankly
one of the largest packs that we as a team have come up against.
One remark from a colleague of "Shit, can't believe that bloke
is playing wing..." J Samuel, rests my case.
The opening moments of the game set the tone for the whole match,
the heavies were going to use all the tricks in the book and push
the ref to the limit of his minimal capability. The ball nudged
out of Mr St Croix hands at the first scrum proved this, but Mark
you must play the whistle and get on with it.
The Baa baa's on numerous occasions put in excellent tackles but
certainly as Rich Little demonstrated we can also bounce off in
style.
One highlight was seeing Mr Flather take the ball folowing a 22
drop out to allow him a straight run, uphill to the try line. However
the ref could not believe the pace of Flather and called our loose
forward off side!
Unfortuantely the run of play did not go our way and we found ourselves
down on points at half time although the Baa Baa's did need to contend
with a strong wide and sharp incline!
The second half began with great energy and lead to a try from
Mark St Croix following a huge "Gary Owen" from Mark Astill
that Julian Samuel duly converted.
Great fun was also had in the second half seeing Samuel fleeced
by a man considerably older than him and also watching our 63 year
old opponent step off his left foot to pass our friend Mr Jackson,
majestic!
One further try followed following a great individual effort from
Mark Astill, that Jules converted, well done, but the final push
was not enough and the score finished 21-14 to the heavies.
Team colours go to:
Julian Samuel for fleet of foot, we will now refer to him as Achilles
Richard Leslie for not playing and getting complacent
Rich Little for losing his keys in the kit bag.
