Morning starts to Baa Baa's games are notoriously slow -
too many TVRs the night before, yet the cold but sunny March morning
saw a Baa Baas side really fired up to make it a 'full house' of victories
against Old Paulines. Over the years the Baa Baas have played every
side, from the Vets to a stunning victory over the 2nds earlier in
the season so a match against the 1sts was much anticipated.
With Smith marshalling the centres and Captaining the side the
Baa Baas fielded a pretty strong team, a strong pack (despite Dazzla
finally getting a back-row berth!) was complimented by a versatile
set of backs eager to run the ball. However, it took 17 points -
two lucky tries including one interception and a grudgingly well
crafted charge by their openside before the Baa Baas replied. With
minutes left in the first half Maceachern received the ball after
a quick tap penalty 5 yards out and a dived for the line - the Baa
Baas were back in the game.
Throughout the match the forwards provided a good platform for
the backs to operate from, the ball was shipped out and Smith made
several charging runs through the centre which kept the opposition
on the back foot. With the backs supported by quick accurate ball
from Dunston in the first half and De St Croix in the second and
Maltwood running from full-back even the referee started to enjoy
the game.
However, Old Paulines were well drilled and it is that fact alone
which tipped the balance. Smith's late try gave hope of a victory,
the Baa Baas had the majority of the play, but the constant stoppages
for injuries broke up the continuity.
A great game despite the loss and one which a full strength Baa
Baas side would easily win next time!
