The final result on Saturday was 18-17. A disappointing
loss for the Baabaas but a game from which we could draw a lot of
positives.
It was an excellent display by the forwards and a pleasure to play
with so many committed guys up front. However somehow we lost the
game plan
somewhere and although we scored a fantastic try in the corner in
the final seconds, it was too little too late. Perhaps we've all
been watching too many England games recently, but we should have
won and didn't.
Roger Smith opened the scoring shirking off 2 tacklers to reach
the line just before half time. However after the turnaround Old
Wimbledonians found two huge gaps in our defence to score twice
in quick succession.
A successful Lineout (for a change) and always going forward in
the scrum the forwards secured a lot of ball, but missing an experienced
No 8 meant that occasionally wrong options were taken and the ball
was lost or knocked on under pressure from the other side.
Johnny Ellis scored a well taken try in the dying seconds after
steeling the opposition ball at the lineout, but after a valiant
attempt the angle was too steep for Steve Jackson to hit through
the posts. And we departed the field one point short of victory.
A shame but still excellent fun and I'm looking forward to the
rest of the
season.
Also a big thank you to any new faces who turned out - the baabaas
are building a great squad.
