In unprecedented Baa Baa history, 26 willing and able athletes
put their name forward for a run against the Law Society 3rds. With
some last minute e-mails the Baa Baas finally put a side together
that would have undoubtedly performed better than the Australians
did later that afternoon.
The Baa Baas were slow to get going conceding an early try out
wide as the backs uncharacteristically let their defence lapse.
5-nil. Baa Baas responded though with the forwards taking it up
to them. Big Trevor Byrne was almost unstoppable driving up the
middle from 2nd phase ball and keenly supported by a hungry pack.
For a second week the Baa Baas scrum ruled supreme with a stoic
performance by the front three of Haydn Simpson, "Jum Bruwnly"
and Mark "Not So Lardy!" Abrahams. With this solid base
the Baa Baas won quality ball. 15 minutes into the half and 20 yards
out the BaaBaas scrummed down. The infallible Flather picked up
from the back of the scrum and punched it up close in the forwards.
Abrahams crossed over on the 3rd phase proving again his pre-match
ritual of sharing his breakfast with his team-mates was a good move.
The ever reliable boot of Jules Samuel took the Baabaas into the
lead for the first time. 5-7.
Law Society however did not relent. Some vigorous rucking - Sorry,
but his head was truly underneath the ball! - saw the game heat
up. Law Society scored again out wide but were unable to convert.
The score remained 10-7 going into half time.
Baa Baas made some changes. Daniel Tufery moved into the 2nd row
while Ant Cavalini enjoyed his come back after 6 weeks out. Their
impact was noticeable. The backs continued to attack with vigour
and the centre combination of Jackson and Ritchie continually broke
the gain line testing Law Society's defence. Clean lineout ball
from the towering Entwistle helped set up the next try which saw
a break on the blind side. Dashing runs from Ian MacEchearn and
Damien Maltwood combined with support from loose forwards saw Flather
fall over the line in the corner. Samuals managed to convert from
an acute angle putting the BaaBaas back into the lead. 10-14.
The final try was a an excellent team try an a fitting way to end
the match. Quick ball from a lineout saw the ball move sweetly in
the backs hands. A lovely sidestep from Jackson saw him finish the
game with a deserved try.
Again Samuel converted finishing with 3 from 3. Final score 10-21
