Trying to organise a team in the week
leading up to this match seemed to prove the most difficult thing
about this fixture. A decision was made on Friday afternoon that despite
lacking some key positions (particularly forwards) we would go ahead
with the game. This decision was justified in the morning as a full
compliment turned up to play. Special thanks to those who risked their
health and the kiwi contingent for there recruiting skills.
With many of us having a run out for the first time this year (some
in 5 years), the talk was to get the basics right. This was even
more crucial having seen the ref, who coincidentally was wearing
the same socks as our Gaelic opposition!
The match got underway and it wasn't long before the Black Baa's
Baa's got into their stride. The forwards worked well as a unit
providing good and generally clean ball for the backs to use. The
new center partnership of Danny and Roger soon put their authority
on the game creating space for each other and those outside them,
particularly for Tim who dazzled his way to a hatrick of tries with
some penetrative runs from inside our own 22.
The Black Baa's Baa's were on fire producing some champagne rugby
that their French counterparts are so well known for. First half
tries came from Roger, Tom, Lachy, Tim 2 and Lardy.
The second half started just how the first half had finished with
tries coming from Tim, Andy, Hamish and an opportunist try from
Lardy thanks to the quick thinking of Andy on a quick line out 10
meters from the oppositions line.
Some of the flair was halted by some strange decisions from the
referee, but the temperament was good as we got on with the game.
The opposition got into our twenty-two late into the second half
but there was a strong resolve on our line and some rule bending
efforts to prevent a score against
At the sound of the final whistle and the score standing at 63 -
0, 55 of those points in tries the Baa's Baa's can be proud of the
rugby they produced. It was a collective team performance and hard
to pick out somebody in particular for man of the match
